Papers, 1854-1913 (bulk 1854-1895).

The collection consists of the correspondence, 1854-1913, of several members of the Meade family of Amelia County and Richmond, Va. The letters, 1854-1895, of Hodijah Lincoln Meade (1842-1902) account for the largest portion of the collection. His letters describe his life and experiences as a student at the University of Virginia, as a Confederate soldier in the 1st Company of Richmond Howitzers and in Company B of the 38th Virginia Artillery Battalion, and as a school teacher in North Carolina and Virginia after the war. Meade's letters to family members during the war describe his life as a soldier in camp and as a participant in the Peninsular, Maryland, Plymouth (N.C.), and Petersburg campaigns. Also in the collection are letters to and from other Meade and related Hardaway family members.
